Affordable Housing Demonstration in Jackson, MS: An Innovative Solution to Address the Housing Crisis
(Jackson, Miss.) – The City of Jackson led by Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba, in collaboration with the Mississippi Manufactured Housing Association (MMHA), Rosemont Human Services and the Neighborhood Assistance Corporation of America (NACA), is thrilled to announce an ambitious and groundbreaking initiative aimed at tackling the pressing issue of affordable housing in our community.
Councilman Brian Grizzell of Ward 4 believes this partnership will introduce quality affordable housing that leverages manufactured homes to provide an accessible and sustainable housing solution for Jackson residents. This initial demonstration will be in the neighborhood bordered by Nimitz, Halsey and Patton streets in Ward 4. If residents are interested, a model home has been built for touring.
Recognizing the urgent need to address the housing crisis, the City of Jackson has joined forces with key stakeholders who share a common “vision of providing safe, long-lasting, affordable, and dignified housing options for individuals and families across the region”, said Chloe Dotson, Director of Planning for the City of Jackson. By combining expertise, resources, and unwavering commitment, this collaboration aims to revolutionize the affordable housing landscape in Jackson – in addition to removing barriers to fair and affordable housing.
The Mississippi Manufactured Housing Association brings deep industry knowledge and experience to the table, and their involvement is pivotal in implementing this demonstration project. Executive Director Jennifer Hall stated, “By harnessing the potential of manufactured homes, we can create affordable housing units that are not only cost-effective but also meet high-quality standards, are equipped with modern amenities.”
Rosemont Church, a cornerstone of the local community, has been actively engaged in addressing housing issues and has generously offered a portion of their land holdings to serve as the sites for this innovative demonstration project. The collaboration between the church and the City of Jackson exemplifies the power of community partnerships and their ability to effect positive change.
Neighborhood Assistance Corporation of America (NACA), a nationally recognized nonprofit organization committed to economic justice through affordable homeownership, joined this initiative to provide financial counseling and access to their Best in America mortgage. Their expertise in housing counseling and mortgage lending will ensure that potential homeowners have the necessary support and guidance to navigate the home buying process successfully.
This affordable housing demonstration project aims to serve as a catalyst for change, showcasing the viability and benefits of manufactured homes in creating sustainable, inclusive communities. “By addressing the shortage of affordable housing options, we can make a significant impact on the lives of our residents, promoting stability and enhancing the overall well-being of our community”, concluded Dotson.
The City of Jackson, MMHA, Rosemont Human Services, and NACA are excited to embark on this important journey together, united by the shared goal of ensuring that every Jackson resident has access to safe and affordable housing.
