Mayor’s Cup

2024 Mayor’s Cup this Friday 
 
(Jackson, Miss.) – The City of Jackson will once again host its annual 2024 Mayor’s Cup this Friday, August 30 at the Pete Brown Golf Facility. Come join the Mayor and others for a fun-filled day of friendly competition on the course. Members of the public and media are welcome to attend.
 
The presenting sponsor for this year’s event is Richard’s Disposal, Inc. Their generosity has led to an increased donation to the First Tee of Central Mississippi and the Grove Park Junior Golf Clinic golf programs. Both junior programs operate out of Pete Brown. In addition, sponsors and players at the Mayor’s Cup will be contributing directly to golf course improvements to keep the course in the best shape it has been in years.
 
Thirty-six teams will compete for bragging rights when the tournament officially begins at 9:30 a.m.  **Members of the media are advised to arrive at 9:15 a.m. for a special presentation.

Statement from City Attorney Drew Martin on recent developments in Retro Metro LLC. vs. City of Jackson federal court case

August 29, 2024
 
(Jackson, Miss.) – “Last year, the City of Jackson vacated office space it had been using at the Metrocenter mall because of deplorable conditions which endangered city employees working there. The space was owned by Retro Metro LLC, which then sued the city for breach of lease, seeking an additional ten years of payments which would have totaled over $4.5 million.
 
“Today, the federal court dismissed those breach of lease claims against the city. The federal court also dismissed various claims Retro Metro made against Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba, Council President Virgi Lindsay, and council members Brian Grizzell and Vernon Hartley.
 
“This outcome supports our ongoing commitment to protect the health and safety of our city employees and the public. The citizens of Jackson and our hardworking employees deserve safe and healthy working environments, and we believe no one should be subjected to poor or unsafe conditions. This decision is a positive step toward ensuring that our community and workforce are treated with the respect and care they deserve.

Recently Damaged and Repaired Traffic Signals Intersection – 8/26/24 update

  1. University Blvd at Florence Ave – flashing due to south bound 3 sections being hit (Replacement are ready to be install, Signals need to be raised to prevent future damage. (Repaired by Contractor/In-House Staff)
  2. University Blvd at U.S. 80- flashing due to controller issues after being hit by lightning and lightning arrestor replacement (Testing controller trying to get it back online) (Repaired by Contractor/ In-House Staff)
  3. Bailey Ave at Medical Mall – flashing due to old transit cabinet needs replaced (pedestal mounted) (Repaired by Contractor)
  4. Northside Dr. at California Ave – flashing due to old transit cabinet needs replaced (pedestal mounted) (Repaired by Contractor)
  5. Pascagoula St. at Roach St. – flashing due to bad controller (Replacement ordered and we are waiting on shipment from Temple) (Repaired by In-House Staff)
  6. Terry Road at McDowell Road – flashing due to electrical issues. Entergy will check this location for voltage irregularity. (In House Staff/Entergy Repaired A Broken Neutral Wire) (3 section signal was hit and replaced last week)
  7. West St. at Mayes St. – flashing due to westbound 5 section being hit (Replacement ready to be installed) (Repaired by Contractor)
  8. Robinson Road at Rose St. – flashing due to old transit cabinet (pedestal mounted) (Repaired by Contractor)
  9. Oak Forest Dr. at Cooper Road – dark due to electrical fire in cabinet (ground mounted stop signs out) (This intersection is a total rebuild due to fire damage.) (Contractor Will Repair)(We are in the Reconstruction Planning Phase)
  10. Ellis Ave at Jesse Drake – flashing due to old transit cabinet and wiring issues. (pole mounted) (The traffic signals at this intersection will be removed to allow traffic to flow on Bobby Rush Blvd and stop signs will be installed on Jesse Drakes and the strip mall exit)
  11. Terry Road at Elton Road – The intersection was destroyed by 18 wheelers (Lewis Electric will start rebuild it this week. Entergy and the city will install taller pole to mount the signals and wires higher.) (Repaired by Contractor) ( Southbound 5 section signal was installed last week)
  12. Briarwood at N. State Street Cabinet damaged over the 4th of July holiday. (Repaired by Contractor)
  13. Hanging Moss at Forest Ave – Replace controller and replace damaged 5 section signal (Repaired by Contractor/In-House Crew)
  14. Cooper Road at Wheatley Street- Two 3 section signals damaged by a large vehicle. (Repaired by Contractor)
  15. Briarwood west of Chilli’s Restaurant – Voltage regulation issue (Repaired by Contractor)
  16. Northside Dr. at Kirkwood Dr. – Repairing damaged Warning Approach Flashers system (Repaired by Contractor)
  17. West Street at Silas Brown Street – Repair controller and replaced damaged 3 section signal heads (Repaired by In- House Crew)
  18. State Street at Pearl Street- On Friday the intersection experienced wiring issues in the mast arm cause intersection to go into flash mode on Friday August 9, 2024 (Repaired by Contractor)
  19. Bailey Ave at Jennings – This intersection was hit by a vehicle late Monday August 19, 2024 causing the intersection to go dark. (Repair by Contractor on Wednesday August 21, 2024)
  20. McDowell Road at Brookwood Dr. – On Friday August 23, 2024 a pedestrian vehicle snagged a hanging AT&T pulling it, causing it to damaged 3 traffic signal heads. We installed a four way sign at the intersection and the signals went into flash mode. (Contractor has scheduled repairs for Monday August 26, 2024)

Ward 2 Special Election

August 19, 2024

(Jackson, Miss.) – The Jackson City Council has declared the Ward 2 City Council seat vacant, thereby requiring a Special Election to be held October 1, 2024.

The Department of Municipal Clerk will be open for voter registration from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. August 26 to August 30. The office will also be open from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday, August 31. Registration is required for voters to be eligible for the Ward 2 Special Election on October 1. The deadline for registration is noon Saturday, August 31.

To accommodate the absentee voting process, the office will be open from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday, September 21 and from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, September 28. The last day to vote by absentee ballot is Saturday, September 28 at noon.

All interested candidates must pick up a qualifying application packet from the Municipal Clerk’s office at Jackson City Hall between the hours of 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, starting on August 20. The qualifying deadline is September 11 at 5 p.m.
