Statement from the City on JTRAN Strike

For Immediate Release:
September 4, 2024
(Jackson, Miss.) – Unfortunately, contract negotiations between the JTRAN bus drivers’ union and management company MV Transportation Inc. have broken down. As a result, the bus drivers have decided to go on strike.
The City is fully aware of the significant impact this has on our community. We are encouraging both sides to return to the table and uphold their responsibilities to the residents who depend on them. We are hopeful that negotiations will resume soon and lead to a fair and timely resolution.
In the meantime, we must inform you that JTRAN is temporarily shut down. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and appreciate your understanding and patience during this challenging time.
The safety of both our drivers and passengers remains our top priority, and we will continue to monitor the situation closely.
We have no further comment at this time.

Update: Environmental Report on Thalia Mara Hall

Earlier this month, the City of Jackson was forced to shut down Thalia Mara Hall after early microbial activity was found. We quickly alerted the public and the media of this development when the information was made available to us. City officials then immediately worked to hire a contractor to analyze the environment, provide a summation and propose options for remediation.

In the interest of transparency, the City of Jackson is releasing the “Indoor Air Quality Assessment” report. The report, reviewed by a senior industrial hygienist, outlines the findings from the company the city contracted with, CTEH – Environmental and Scientific Consulting Services.  The report recommends the repair of the HVAC system and the removal of some carpeting. It also recommends the cleaning of carpets, hard surfaces, floors and soft upholstery. A final air quality clearance survey is also requested. Today, the remediation team will meet with city officials for the third time.

The city remains committed to restoring Thalia and has put great effort in securing funding for those means.  We were recently given $1.5 million in needed funding by the state to help do this. But this is an ongoing effort.

Most important, though, is the health and safety of our community. We will reopen Thalia when these concerns are alleviated. We do not currently have a timeframe of repairs, but will advise the public when we do. The city thanks the public for their patience and understanding during this temporary hiatus.

Statement from City Attorney Drew Martin on recent developments in Retro Metro LLC. vs. City of Jackson federal court case

For Immediate Release:
August 29, 2024

(Jackson, Miss.) – “Last year, the City of Jackson vacated office space it had been using at the Metrocenter mall because of deplorable conditions which endangered city employees working there. The space was owned by Retro Metro LLC, which then sued the city for breach of lease, seeking an additional ten years of payments which would have totaled over $4.5 million.

“Today, the federal court dismissed those breach of lease claims against the city. The federal court also dismissed various claims Retro Metro made against Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba, Council President Virgi Lindsay, and council members Brian Grizzell and Vernon Hartley.

“This outcome supports our ongoing commitment to protect the health and safety of our city employees and the public. The citizens of Jackson and our hardworking employees deserve safe and healthy working environments, and we believe no one should be subjected to poor or unsafe conditions. This decision is a positive step toward ensuring that our community and workforce are treated with the respect and care they deserve.

“The Office of the City Attorney remains dedicated to providing the best legal outcomes for the citizens of Jackson and its employees. We are pleased with this result and will continue to prioritize the well-being of our community as we address the remaining issues in this case.”
