Chief Steve Wood serves as Chief of Special Operations for the City of Jackson Fire Department, where he oversees critical specialized response units and emergency operations. In this leadership role, Chief Wood is responsible for coordinating the department’s most complex and high-risk emergency responses, including technical rescue operations, hazardous materials incidents, and specialized emergency situations.

With over 15 years of dedicated service to the Jackson Fire Department since joining in 2009, Chief Wood has demonstrated exceptional leadership and expertise in emergency management. He has steadily risen through the ranks to reach his current position, earning each promotion through his dedication, skill, and unwavering commitment to public safety. His extensive experience has made him an invaluable asset to both the department and the City of Jackson.

Chief Wood is a graduate of the Mississippi Executive Fire Officer Program from the Mississippi State Fire Academy, reflecting his commitment to advanced fire service leadership and professional development. He also holds numerous specialized classes including Hazardous Material Technician, Structural Collapse Technician, Rope Rescue Technician, Confined Space, Dive Rescue, Swift Water Technician, and Overland Search and Rescue. As a member of the Mississippi Task Force 2, he has been deployed on numerous complex technical rescues throughout the state, bringing his specialized expertise to some of the most challenging emergency situations. These deployments have provided him with invaluable real-world experience in high-stakes rescue operations and enhanced his ability to lead specialized response teams.

Throughout his career advancement, Chief Wood has gained comprehensive knowledge of fire suppression, emergency medical services, and specialized rescue operations. His deep understanding of emergency response protocols and ability to manage complex incidents have been instrumental in his progression to this critical leadership position.
